It was nearing darkness when the allied troops sailed quietly into the shores of Gallipoli. The plan was to capture the peninsula and open the way for the Allied navy to take Constantinople as a distraction for the Russians to help clear armed pressure from the Turks. It was going to be easy with the vast beach and slight dunes of the Gallipoli shores, but under the cover of darkness the ANZAC's couldn't see that they had landed at the wrong spot and were about to be ambushed. That there were no white beaches or flat shores, instead, there was only massive cliff faces, on top of which perched the enemy... awaiting the arrival of the allied forces.
Almost as soon as the boats came ashore the ANZAC's were met with constant enemy fire. They ran from the boats unprepared, terrified and confused about the mistake that had befallen them, and over the course of the next 8 months 20,000 men from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps would dig miles of trenches, unable to make any ground on the enemy..... and almost 10,000 ANZAC's would give their lives for the sake of a lost cause.
Every country has a similar story to tell. One of failure, which ultimately becomes a story of heroes and legend. Interestingly, it is said to be very "Australian" to make legend of an honourable failure, like the one at Eureka and the defeating of the rebels, or the story of Ned Kelly, a fugitive fighting a corrupt government. Australian history is full of these legends. But the story of the ANZAC's carries something much more than these other stories, these were real people, men, boys... who left their homes to fight an overseas war, and gave their lives to ensure that home... stayed home for the loved ones they left behind.
When the war started in 1914 both Australia and New Zealand were in their infancies and Australia had only been a Federal Commonwealth for just 14 years. Many Australians were fighting for two causes, their Empire, and their Commonwealth. In the end, it would be the Empire that would let down so many of its loyal and courageous ANZAC forces and prompt mass resignations from British Parliament. The landing at Gallipoli was not only a failure, but a complete disaster, so many soldiers lost their lives and so much dispair and heartache, and blood.. would be shed. So many husbands, sons, fathers and brothers would perish during the first few hours and days of the landing that it would be hard to imagine how anyone could go on knowing they were defeated from the moment the boats were in sight. After 8 months of having their backs to the water and their lives on display for the taking, the Allies were forced to retreat, if only taking satisfaction that it was due to a stalemate and not an outright slaughter that retreat would allow them to see another day.
Today, ANZAC Day is arguably the single most important recognised holiday on the Australian and New Zealand calendars. It stands as a memorial for not only the 10,000 lives that we lost on the day of April 25 in 1915, but also for any man or woman who commits themselves to their country's defense, and gives their lives to ensure it stays free. For the soliders of the Kokoda Trail, for the brave men of Changi, for the soldiers that fought in Vietnam, for the lives that are lost in wars faught everyday against our enemies, for the un-named soldier who can never return home... and also for the everyday person, who can take comfort in the fact that they are safe, and are sleeping happily in their beds tonight thanks to men and women like the ANZAC's, who will never be forgotten, will be honoured with a moment's silence on the day, and will perpetually be thanked by making our counrty what it is today... great!
We will remember.

Lately I can't find the words I want to post with, so I thought I'd just post some artwork. I haven't done any artworks since July 2004, but I have recently been inspired again. So here is one. I am VERY rusty and I can't quite get things right... but they'll do for now. It's good to be back. I tried to upload two of them and I tried all night and all morning but Blogger is being a shit and wont let me... not to mention the layout of my blog has decided to change itself! Anyway... hope you like this rather rough sketch.
I have complete writers block. I have no ideas, no words, no sentences, no paragraphs...nothing. This sucks.
